Modern Craftsman design embodies all the fundamentals of the original Craftsman home, only with more modern amenities. Keeping the charm of Craftsman is certainly possible in its modern reinvention.
What do think of when you hear Modern Craftsman? Pitched roofs and grand front porches? Wood, stone and stucco combined exteriors? Here are some Modern Craftsman design ideas for windows and doors.
Modern Craftsman design: windows
Modern Craftsman homes typically feature multiple window shapes and sizes. Windows aren’t merely for majestic views. They work as a seamless part of the entire design. They can be symmetrical or asymmetrical, there’s no hard rules about Modern Craftsman.
Exteriors often combine windows and patio doors and use the same grille patterns to keep the design cohesive.
Standard single- or double-hung windows are at home in a Modern Craftsman. Double-hung windows are common in Modern Craftsman homes, typically with a grille pattern on the upper window. Window trim on the interior is often used and stained to match other wood accents in the home. Exterior trim is available in multiple options to blend with the material used on the home from wood siding to brick.
However, many designs feature slim horizontal casement windows. Depending on the interior design and placement, you can also find circular and geometric shaped windows.
Modern Craftsman design: doors
An eclectic front door is the entry to every Modern Craftsman home. Tucked under an expanded front porch, Modern Craftsman doors are built to stand out. A radius door is a favorite for the Modern Craftsman designer. Its simple curved top balances with all the straight lines of porches and roofs.
Not everyone loves the curve, so a standard Modern Craftsman door may be a three panel – one vertical at the top, two horizontal at the bottom. The vertical panel can be solid or glass. Decorative glass in front doors makes a unique statement. It can be more elaborate with pattern or plain.
One additional element to add to a door to make it more Craftsman is a shelf under a glass panel. It’s just a touch of character that adds depth to any entry door.
